In the spirit of Give to Gain, how does investing in diversity strengthen the long-term resilience and performance of our maritime workforce?

Investing in diversity is not a social gesture, it is a resilience strategy. When we invest in opportunity, we gain stronger teams, better decisions, and a future-ready maritime workforce. When we widen the talent pool, we strengthen capability, adaptability, and continuity. Shipping operates in dynamic, high-risk environments. A workforce that reflects diverse perspectives is better prepared to anticipate change, manage complexity, and sustain long-term performance.

How does a more diverse crew enhance decision-making, safety culture, and the overall Human Element in shipping?

Shipping is built on teamwork and judgment. Diverse crews bring varied experiences, communication styles, and problem-solving approaches. This broadens risk awareness and reduces blind spots. A strong safety culture depends on open dialogue and mutual respect. When individuals feel heard and valued, they are more likely to speak up — and that strengthens the Human Element at sea.

What role does leadership play in creating an inclusive maritime environment where every seafarer can thrive?

Leadership sets the tone - onboard and ashore. Inclusion does not happen by policy alone; it happens through behaviour.

  1. Set clear expectations on respect and professionalism
  2. Encourage open communication
  3. Ensure equal access to learning and career pathways
  4. Address concerns fairly and promptly

An inclusive culture is built through consistent actions, not statements.

What is one stereotype about women in maritime that you would love to see disappear?

The assumption that physical strength defines competence at sea. Modern shipping is driven by skill, knowledge, teamwork, and decision-making - not by outdated perceptions. Professional capability has no gender.

During long voyages, team chemistry matters a lot. How does diversity onboard contribute to morale and mutual respect among crew members?

Long voyages test endurance and emotional balance. Diversity brings different perspectives, communication styles, and cultural awareness that enrich onboard life. When managed with professionalism, diversity encourages empathy, broader understanding, and stronger team chemistry all essential for morale and safe vessel operations.

If you could give one piece of advice to young women who are curious about the maritime world, what would it be?

If you are curious, explore it seriously. The sea rewards competence, discipline, and resilience and not stereotypes. Seek strong training, build technical excellence, and surround yourself with mentors. Maritime is challenging, but it is also deeply rewarding for those who commit to it.
